Robotic lawn mowers are one of the latest technological upgrades that can massively improve our home maintenance, joining robotic vacuum cleaners and dishwashers as they do the bulk of the work for us.
The best robot lawn mowers tend to your yard for you, giving you control while the robot mows your lawn. During the precious summer months, this can free up a huge amount of time to soak up the sun and enjoy more moments in your garden.
To help you find the right robot mower for your garden, we’ve compared two of the biggest robotic lawn mower brands: Husqvarna and Worx.
Both brands are massive names in the gardening world, providing strong and trusted gardening tools, equipment, and cordless machinery for years. When it comes to robot mowers, both have an extensive range of models at various price points, so we’ve dived into two of the leading brands’ most popular and capable models: the Husqvarna Automower 415X and the Worx Landroid L WR155.
These models both offer some of the most advanced features you'll find within the brands' respective robotic mower series: Automower and Landroid. As an effective way to compare the two brands, we've chosen lawn mowers that have features you'll find across their range.
Of course, there are other affordable choices, like the MowRo RM24A, and for more (non-robotic) recommendations, check out our guide to the best lawn mowers.
When it comes to robot lawn mowers, you're ideally looking for a machine that can do as much of the job as possible for you. They're cleverly programmed tools, and for how much they cost, you'll want them to be able to keep your lawn looking beautiful.
One of the key differences between the Husqvarna 415X and the Worx WR155 is that the Worx requires no boundary wires. The Husqvarna uses a boundary wire to determine its area, which you'll have to install, and many users recommend getting a professional to install it (Husqvarna provides this service at an extra cost). The Worx has a neural network designed to identify grass and obstacles, even at night, so the only installation required is positioning a few RFID tags.
If you like your grass at a specific length, it's worth noting that the Husqvarna's cutting height is between 0.8 and 2 inches, while the Worx can cut between 1.5 and 3 inches. The Husqvarna's cutting width is also 0.7 inches wider (at 8.7 inches), which could potentially be more time-efficient when tackling your lawn.
Both models have automatic charging, so although the Husqvarna may have a longer battery life, ultimately, they can both maintain the whole lawn in their own time. They're also both IPX5 water rated, so you can wash the exterior and underneath easily with a hose for long-term care and maintenance.
The Worx boasts a Full HDR, wide-angle camera with auto white balance so that it can adapt to its surroundings while confidently detecting obstacles in different daylight and weather conditions. This is particularly handy if you'd prefer to trust the lawn mower to run in the background with minimal supervision - even at night.
The Husqvarna does things differently. The robot mower creates a virtual map of your lawn, giving you control so that you can create work areas, vary cutting heights for different sections, schedule on/off running times, and even create stay-out zones. This can be controlled using the Connect app or by using Amazon Alexa or Google Home by saying something like: 'turn off when the kids come home.' The software is comprehensive if you're happy to spend the time perfecting your routine and areas.
When it comes to cutting grass, both mowers have unique features to keep your lawn looking fresh and even. Narrow passages are no problem for either mower as they both automatically adjust their cutting style to accommodate for tight spaces. The Worx mower can cut grass right up to the edge of your lawn to minimize manual trimming, and it has a floating cutting disc that can automatically lift when the ground is uneven.
But the Husqvarna has some stand-out features to make sure your lawn is evenly cut. The cutting disc can detect longer patches of grass to automatically switch the robot lawn mower to a systematic spiral cutting pattern. And, if you ever want to target a particular patch of long grass (like where some furniture used to be), you can use the spot-cutting mode. Once it's cut, it'll resume in automatic mode for the rest of your lawn. Plus, to maximize the quality of your lawn, it will automatically lower the cutting height from maximum to desired height over 10 days.
The Worx uses some smart detection tech. It can automatically adapt its working time depending on the weather, grass species, and soil type - to make sure that it's mowing your lawn at the optimal moments. The Husqvarna has something similar: it can adjust the working time to the lawn's growth rate so that it mows during periods of strong grass growth to decrease wear on the lawn and the mower. It stops when it's frosty to protect your grass, and you can even set a 'rewilding zone' that it will leave untouched to promote biodiversity.
Both models can handle multiple lawn areas, but the Husqvarna takes the feature further with the ability to manage a separate, secondary area that's detached from the main lawn. Plus, you can create several profiles so that you can share the robotic mower across different locations. This could save you a tonne of money if you could use it at work, have multiple homes, or fancy sharing the mower with others!
The Husqvarna Automower 415X currently sits at $1,999.99, while the Worx Landroid L WR155 is priced at $1,499.99. Both brands often have site-wide sales that can knock a few hundred off the cost if you time it right.
Caring for robotic mowers is about as easy as it gets, and both models have automatic software updates, so hopefully, the long-term maintenance cost of either model should be minimal. If you buy direct, both offer a 3-year warranty for peace of mind over the next few years.
To get straight to the point: the Husqvarna Automower 415X and the Worx Landroid L WR155 are both very capable lawn mowers. Having either of these models in your yard will likely leave your grass looking idyllic, fresh, and evenly cut. Husqvarna and Worx are continuing their tradition of producing high-quality products that get the job done.
But when you compare these two robot mowers, the Husqvarna has a more impressive set of features. The comprehensive programming software gives you a lot more freedom when it comes to how, when, and where you want your grass to be cut.
However, as it currently sits at an extra $500, it's worth considering whether these extra, more advanced features are worth the higher cost. It's likely that the Worx WR155 will do everything you expect, but if you're after more control and freedom, as well as additional grass-evening features, then the Husqvarna Automower 415X is worth it.
