Tim Sears Jr. working hard to improve his super DIRT Series Program
Tim Sears Jr. is the DIRT big-block modified point leader on Friday nights at the Brewerton Speedway. This 30-year-old Hastings driver also leads the Fulton Speedway’s DIRT 358 modified point list.
The past three years, Tim has dabbled with competing on the Super DIRT Series Tour but has found it much tougher to climb onto the podium of this popular, DIRT touring series. While he has 46 career wins at his two weekly tracks, Tim has yet to win on the Super DIRT Series Tour.
“When you compete on the SDS tour, you’re running against the cream of the crop in DIRT racing every night,” said Sears. “Guys like Matt Sheppard, Stewart Friesen and Mat Williamson are at every show and the quality of competition takes a big jump.”
“Plus, many of the tracks I’ve never raced at before and it takes time to develop a notebook for each new track to help get your car handling properly”, said Sears.
Tim and his father run a general construction business and finding time to work on the cars sometimes becomes a problem during the summer construction season.
“Many of the top teams have full-time crewmen that work on the cars all day during the busy summer season,” said Sears. “When we’re real busy with mid-week races, finding time to prep the cars can be a problem.”
Tim’s EV Energy-sponsored race team consists of two Troyer-built DIRT modifieds, powered by Kevlar-built big and small block engines.
“When it’s really busy racing in the summer, it’s really a family affair and a few friends working hard in the garage getting the equipment ready for the track,” said Sears.
“While it’s great to be on top at Brewerton and Fulton, I’d really like to step up my game on the Super DIRT Series Tour and climb on their podium once in a while.
DIRT mods in Quebec
Following the Sunday night program at Weedsport, many of the big-block modified teams headed north to Drummondville, Quebec for a pair of 75-lap, Super DIRT Series events at the Autodrome Drummond Monday and Tuesday night.
Due to Covid and border restrictions, these were the first DIRT events in Canada in over four years.
Monday night’s 75 lapper saw Erick Rudolph pick up a $7,500 win for his seventh feature triumph of 2023. David Hebert, Steve Bernier and Mat Williamson followed, with Matt Sheppard seventh and Larry Wight tenth.
Tuesday’s main event saw Sheppard leading down the stretch, but the SDS point leader got spun out by David Hebert and ended up ninth.
Mike Mahaney of King Ferry went on for the $10,000 victory, with Hebert, Erick Rudolph, Steve Bernard and Mat Williamson following. Larry Wight of Phoenix was eighth, followed by Sheppard and Tim Sears Jr.
The three-race Canadian SDS swing ended Wednesday night with another 75-lap main event at the Brockville (Ontario) Speedway.
Veteran Tim Fuller of Edwards started seventh in the field but grabbed off the top spot on the 51st circuit and cruised to his seventh feature win of the season.
Matt Sheppard ended up second and Mat Williamson third. Australian Peter Britten made a nice comeback in his backup big-block after flipping his primary mount Monday in Quebec. Britten finished fourth, with Jimmy Phelps, Mike Mahaney, Chris Hile, Jack Lehner, Tim Sears Jr. and Max McLaughlin completing the top ten finishers.
